Frequently Asked Questions
ALA is the only antioxidant in the world that is both water-soluble and fat-soluble — meaning it can work in every tissue compartment of the body, inside and outside cells. Most antioxidants are limited to one environment. ALA also regenerates other antioxidants (Vitamins C and E, CoQ10, and Glutathione) once they've been used up, effectively multiplying your total antioxidant defence. It's been called the 'antioxidant of antioxidants' for this reason.
Both contain the same compound. 250mg is the ideal starting dose — it provides meaningful antioxidant and mild insulin-sensitising effects and is the right choice for general metabolic health, those new to ALA, or those stacking it alongside other antioxidants. 500mg is the more therapeutically studied dose for blood glucose regulation, diabetic neuropathy, and higher oxidative stress demands. You can also start at 250mg and increase to 500mg after 1–2 weeks to assess tolerance. We do provide a 250mg Capsule Dose
ALA improves insulin receptor signalling and increases the activity of GLUT-4 transporters in muscle cells, which pull glucose out of the bloodstream more efficiently. Multiple clinical trials show ALA supplementation reduces fasting blood glucose and HbA1c in people with Type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance. Taking it just before a carbohydrate-containing meal is the most strategic timing for blood glucose support.
ALA crosses the blood-brain barrier and protects neurons from oxidative damage — it's clinically used for diabetic peripheral neuropathy (burning, tingling in hands and feet) where 600mg/day has shown significant symptom reduction. It also has chelating properties, binding heavy metals like lead, mercury, and cadmium to facilitate their removal from the body. This makes it a useful addition to detox protocols when combined with glutathione precursors like NAC.
Always take ALA with food — it can cause mild nausea on an empty stomach. For blood glucose support, take just before your largest carbohydrate meal. ALA works best as part of a broader antioxidant network — stack it with CoQ10 (mitochondrial antioxidant), NAC (glutathione precursor), Vitamin C, and Vitamin E for comprehensive cellular protection. ALA actively regenerates all of these, making the entire stack more effective than any single compound alone.
