Frequently Asked Questions
Valerian root contains valerenic acid, which inhibits the breakdown of GABA in the brain — the neurotransmitter responsible for calming neural activity. This produces a natural sedative effect that helps you fall asleep faster without the grogginess of pharmaceutical sleep aids.
Unlike conventional sleep medications, valerian-based supplements typically do not cause next-day sedation at recommended doses. Most users wake feeling rested rather than groggy. Individual responses vary, so start with the lowest dose and assess your response.
Take it 30–45 minutes before your intended bedtime. This allows the valerian to build up in your system and reach peak effect around the time you're trying to fall asleep. Avoid taking it during the day as it may cause drowsiness.
Valerian root is generally considered safe for short to medium-term nightly use (up to 4–6 weeks). Some practitioners recommend cycling it — use for 4 weeks, then take a 1–2 week break — to maintain effectiveness.
Valerian can potentiate the effects of CNS depressants, including alcohol, benzodiazepines, and other sedative medications. If you are on any prescription medication, consult your doctor before use. Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
